A common challenge faced by IELTS Reading test takers is insufficient time to finish all questions. Consequently, mastering efficient and purposeful reading strategies becomes critical for success.
Several core competencies are required to excel in this test. The following approaches can be systematically applied to each text:
STRATEGY 1 Preliminary Analysis
(a) Survey the passage by identifying: headings, section titles, visual aids (charts/diagrams), and text formatted in bold or italics.
(b) Scan strategically to process key sections rapidly. Skimming involves quickly processing the text to grasp its overarching message rather than decoding every detail. Multiple skimming methods exist:
– Glide through the content at pace to capture essential meanings without pausing on unfamiliar vocabulary. Prioritize speed over exhaustive comprehension during this phase.
– Alternatively, focus on the title, subheadings, and graphics if available.
A proven skimming technique involves prioritizing the introductory paragraph, which typically outlines core concepts. The opening sentence of each section often serves as a topic sentence, encapsulating the paragraph’s primary focus. Similarly, the closing paragraph frequently synthesizes key ideas from the entire text.
STRATEGY 2 Analyzing Headings, Subheadings, and Visual Elements
Interpreting a passage’s central theme is foundational to comprehension. The theme represents the core message or fundamental concept underlying the text.
Recognizing this central theme simplifies understanding supporting details and arguments. When readers accurately pinpoint or interpret the main concept, navigating associated information within the passage becomes significantly more manageable.
